Flagship of the Manhattan Sailing
Club To commemorate Manhattan Sailing Club's 20th anniversary in 2007, a group of members formed a syndicate to buy a 12 Meter sailboat. The 12 Meter class epitomizes the spirit and tradition of American yachting. Our syndicate acquired "America II" (US 46). She campaigned for the America's Cup in 1987 in Freemantle, Australia. Three "America IIs" were commissioned by the New York Yacht Club: US 42, 44 & 46. Our vessel, US 46, was the one which sailed in the Cup races with John Kolius at the helm. US 42 is in Greenwich, CT and run by a sailing foundation. US 44 is in Hawaii and used for sailing charters. America II has served as our club flagship since 2007. We have a special bond with this beautiful and majestic vessel. America II began her sailing career in 1987, the same year our club opened its doors. We hope to celebrate many anniversaries together into the future! Since America II arrived in New York Harbor in 2007, she has been sailing under the logo of Moet & Chandon. In 2008, America II made her first expedition out of the harbor, traveling in July to Newport, RI for the 100th Birthday Regatta for Olin Stephens. In 2009, she plans to race in Newport again both in July and for the World Championships in September. If members are interested, she may also race in Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket this summer.
Make a reservation to sail on America II While America II is in New York Harbor this summer, all members from 2008 and before are invited to sail on her once this summer. Sailing on a 12 Meter is an incredible experience. The Syndicate Members have enjoyed this great privilege. Now the Syndicate is opening this opportunity to all club members. Skippering America II this summer will be Marcus Cholerton-Brown (right) and Peter Wechter. Last year, Marcus completed a circumnavigation of the world as one of the skippers in the Clipper Race. He specializes in training and corporate sails. Peter has been a club member and instructor for many years. America II will sail on Wednesday, Thursday & Friday evenings as well as Saturdays and Sundays during the afternoon and evening. Every member can go sailing once as space permits. Please book early in the year as the end of the year might fill up. This opportunity is only open to members from 2008 and before and not open to new members this year. Once you have been a member of the club for a year, then you get to go sailing on the 12 Meter. This restriction is necessary because the club currently has more than 700 members.
