Day 1 - Moorings Base, the Baths & Loose Mongoose

Day 1 began at the Moorings base where teams had arrived the day before for an evening
start. Early on Sunday, boats headed out individually for the long upwind trip to
the Baths. This was known as the "Shake Out Sail" and with 30 knots of
wind on the nose, more than one sailor was shaken. But the reward of the Baths was
great and sailors gathered at the top of the Baths for the Skippers Meeting. In the
afternoon, the "Last Resort Race" was held with the finish line designated as
one person at the Loose Mongoose bar. There was some question when Howard Portrate's
J/120 team got to the bar first, but without any money. Rear Commodore John LaGrassa
hoped of his 463 and got the bar second but had money to buy the drinks. The final
winner of this race will obviously have to be decided by an appropriate appeals court.
That night, the dinner was meant to be held at the Last Resort but since it was
closed for a private party, everyone went back to the Loose Mongoose and soon they were
dancing on the tables. What a first night!
