The morning rose crisp, warm and clear with a 15 knot trade wind from the East. A perfect Caribbean day break. Our fleet dropped their moorings lines and motored out of North Sound. At 9:30 a.m., the sails were raised and the course was set at 010, the bearing for Anegada. We all enjoyed this special sail in unique ways. I spent most of the time on the bow of the boat, rising up and down in the swell, looking through the turquoise Caribbean water to the shallow bottom, looking ahead as the flat and sandy paradise broke on the horizon and then edged closer and closer.
We had arrived. And a relaxing day of snorkeling, sun bathing and tropical drinks was followed by plane rides, a culinary contest, cocktails, birthday parties, a lobster dinner at Neptune's Treasure and dancing on the bar outside to the Lashing Dogs' refrain of "Glorious."
We had not been scheduled to organize De MYC Caribbean Regatta this year. But in October, we had decided that yes, there were some things we wanted and had to do, now and today. One of these was to sail back to Anegada, to lead the Manhattan Sailing Club back ashore and to plant our flag firmly and forever on this small island of innocence and isolation.
We were allowed to succeed. And so this special evening, I was able to retire from organizational duties and pass the torch to Zander Lassen and Jim Hedelston symbolically through the burgees of the Royal British Virgin Islands Yacht Club and the West End Yacht Club. These gentlemen, well versed in Greek mythology and the loin cloth techniques developed by the centeaurs, promptly showed great leadership in a unique display of nautical club pomp and circumstance combined with the full monty, not realizing that behind them stood the wait staff, now as red as the lobsters. The party had begun and our new leaders were ready to bring us home. There were beautiful stars that evening.
