A Mentor's Manual (PDF 104KB) The MSC Mentor Program is designed for members with advanced sailing and boat handling skills, who would like to become skippers with our club. I'm Robin Hamm, the Chair of the Mentor Program, responsible for providing guidance to members aiming to become MSC skippers. The more skippers we have, the more members go sailing, so a successful Mentor Program is important for our club. Club skippers, the backbone of the program, serve as Mentors to these members, volunteering their time and sharing their experience. Volunteering as a mentor is very rewarding, and we are always interested in adding more talented mentors to our Mentor Program. If you are an experienced MSC skipper and would like to become a mentor, please contact me about the process at robinsailor@gmail.com. The goals of the program are to assist these members in becoming skippers by:
More detailed information about the program is included in A Mentor's Manual (PDF). Some members come to the Mentor Program with a lifetime of sailing experience, while others may be fairly advanced after sailing for a short time. Before joining the Mentor Program, it's important to evaluate your own sailing skills and knowledge. To join the program, a certain level of sailing experience is required, in addition to knowledge of our harbor, club and safety rules, and our J/24 fleet. If you are unsure of the level of your skill level, you should participate in some Fleet Captain sails and ask the skipper for their feedback. The Fleet Captain Program is another great way to assess the level of your sailing and boat handling skills, and meet other members. If you would like to join the program, please email your name, contact details and details of your sailing experience to robinsailor@gmail.com. Please also include the names of MSC skippers you have sailed with, and any questions you may have. Then go to our Next Steps page to find out how to get started. Best of luck! Robin
