You’ve heard about the “24 Hours of Les Mans.” Well, get ready for the “24 Hours of Manhattan.” This will be a new J/24 event in 2023. Space will be limited so if you wish to participate, now is the time to raise your hand. As the name implies, the 24 Hours of Manhattan will be a 24-hour endurance race. It will start at 5 pm on Friday afternoon and end at 5 pm on Saturday. The dates in 2023 will be June 24 & 25.
The course will be around the Honorable William Wall, using the same windward-leeward mark system as our normal Tuesday & Wednesday races. But the difference is there is no fixed length of the race. The challenge will be who can do the most number of laps within 24 hours.
To make the race more interesting, there are no crew limitations. You can race with a crew or 2, 4, 6 or whatever you like. Unlimited substitution is allowed during the race, but you have to make a pit stop to change crew. Making a pit stop means exiting the race course by passing through a gate at the Honorable William Wall and then heading back to dock. Once you are through the gate, you can use your engine to get to and from dock. If you think about this, it’s best to make a pit stop in car racing while under the yellow flag. In sailing, its best to make a pit stop when the wind is very light so competitors cannot add laps while you are off the course.
Thirteen white boats will be made available for the first “24 Hours of Manhattan.” We expect the event will sell out quickly as sailors battle for the title of “Iron” in front of their names. Who will be the best team for 24 hours?
Since this is a type of marathon, we also expect there to be a charity component where teams can get raise pledges per number of laps completed.
