Decommissioning Ceremony & Drink the Bar Dry Party

Friday, November 1, 2024 from 6 to 9 pm (speeches at 7 pm with the burgee lowered afterwards).

There are two important sailing traditions every self-respecting club member must know about.

First is the Commissioning Ceremony. This is the glorious day in the spring when we raise the club burgee, fire the cannon and celebrate the start of the new sailing.

Second is the Decommissioning Ceremony.  This is the evening in the fall, when we lower the club burgee, fire the cannon and officially declare the summer season to be over. And while you might think this could be a sad event, it is actually a fun and boisterous celebration of all the friendships and sailing we have made over the summer. It is also the transition from summer to winter Frostbite Racing.

And the Decommissioning Ceremony gets even better. Since we are the Manhattan Yacht Club, we like to celebrate with style and conviction! So we combine our Decommissioning Ceremony with the annual “Drink the Bar Dry Party.” As you know, we have the famous clubhouse in the harbor known as the Honorable William Wall. At the end of each season, there is always some extra beer, wine and Mount Gay Rum left over. We have no choice but to drink the bar dry so we can start fresh again next spring. This is your invitation to pitch in and help out!

By the way, this event will also include the first “Caribbean Pump Up Party.” Some of the skippers for the Caribbean Regatta will be there to say hello to potential crew. If you are thinking about joining De Caribbean Regatta this winter, then please plan on attending.

Dress for the weather. Members may bring guests.
