Club Members can take part in a new racing tradition – Sunfish Races.
The Club organizes a Saturday series during the summer as well as a Frostbite Series during the winter (click the Frostbite link for info about that program).
Summer racing is from 2:30 to 4 pm each Saturday. Up to 5 short course races are held. The races are in the cove by the Honorable William Wall. You can have friends and family come out to the clubhouse to watch and cheer for you.
So buy yourself a Sunfish ASAP. You don’t need anything fancy to get started. Just search online for a basic boat. Then start sailing. Once you have started, you can improve your boat and learn from the other sailors.
This program is open to all Members. You do not have to have J/24 skipper privileges to participate. In fact, this is a great way to learn and sharpen your sailing skills. Just put on your lifejacket, learn how to right a capsized boat and then begin sailing. You can also get some private lessons to accelerate your skills. By the end of the summer, you will be racing the Sunfish and having the time of your life.
History of the Program – In the winter of 2016-2017, Manhattan Yacht Club created a frostbite sailing program for Sunfish dinghies. Ten boats joined the first year. In the summer of 2017, the Club also founded an IOD Fleet after Members raced these boats in Bermuda. During the first year, the IODs did not have engines and they were able to successfully get in and out of the marina and sail in the harbor. So if the IODs could do it, the Club felt that Sunfish should also be able to do it. The frostbite program had grown to 18 boats. Why shouldn’t the Sunfish also be able to race around the Honorable William Wall in summertime. On Sat, Sept 15, a test regatta was held and 7 Sunfish participated. It was a resounding success which now leads to the start of an on-going Saturday Sunfish Series beginning June 1, 2019.
